Tuesday night’s game against the Cavs will possibly be the Celtics’ truest test of the season. Yes, even more important than their loss against the Orlando Magic. The Cavs are the defending Eastern Conference Champions.
Now, maybe Cleveland pulled off the feat in a much weaker conference last season, when it only took one superstar (LeBron James) to make it to the NBA Finals. But, they’re still the top dog until they are knocked off. A win on the road against the defending conference champs does still mean something for the Celtics.
I do believe however that the Cavs aren’t the team they were last year…well wait. That’s the problem. They ARE the team they were last year, almost exactly. They didn’t get better whatsoever. Meanwhile, teams like the Celtics and Magic got WAY better.
What I mean to say is that this Cavs team as it is will not win 50 games this year for a third straight season. I envision something like 45-47 wins (which still is not bad), but the conference got stronger, thus a team that remained the same should by default get weaker.
A win for the C’s would mean more because Cleveland is coming off a 3-game winning streak to bring their overall season record to 8-6 (a far cry from 11-1 I know). The Celtics come in having won 3 in a row of their own. Something’s gotta give.
