Mike Bibby Calls Out Celts Fans; Perkins

As if the Celtics didn’t have enough motivation to blow out the Hawks tonight, Celtics fans now have a viral enemy; Mike Bibby.

The veteran point guard called out Celtics fans yesterday saying, “They were kind of loud at the beginning. But a lot of these fans are bandwagon jumpers trying to get on this now. I played here last year, too. And I didn’t see three fourths of them. They’re for the team now and they might get a little rowdy but that’s about it.”

Kendrick Perkins then responded, “Coming off a 2-for-10 shooting performance, you expect a guy to say something like that,” Perkins said. “We have the best fans in the world, but we don’t expect other players to like our fans.”

Then Bibby today lashed out again, “I don’t know where [Perkins] got this tough streak from,” said Bibby. “His stat line was worse than mine. Until he does something in his career, for him to come at me like that, it kind of upsets me.”

Perkins finally took the high ground and decided not to respond. However, it should make for an interesting Game 2 tonight at the Garden.

My Take: What an idiot. If you want to call out Celtics fans, don’t do it when you still have a game left in the building (and they do because the Celts will finish off the Hawks in Game 4 in Hot-lanta). Bibby had no reason to say what he did. Some will say it’s to take the pressure of the young guys, but it will only motivate the fans to be even more into a game which should be a 20 point Celtics lead by half.

Here’s where Bibby is wrong. First, of course there are going to be fans who watch and attend the game tonight simply because the Celts are in the playoffs. But to say that 3/4 weren’t there last year is just wrong. I don’t have the statistics right now, but I’d bet to say the Celts filled 70-80% of the building last year. Secondly, in regards to the beef with Perkins, Bibby is quick to point to Perkins’ performance when in reality, Perk had just as many assists (one) as Bibby did in Game 1. Just to point out for the record, Mike Bibby is a point guard.

Lastly, Kendrick Perkins made $4.4 million dollars this year. Bibby? $13 mil. Shut up Mike, and enjoy the last three games in your 10th year of a failed career.
