Twins Take Series Over Red Sox

Livan Hernandez

Manny Ramirez blasted his 498th career HR (a two-run shot) in the first inning off Livan Hernandez, and it appeared the Red Sox would be in good shape to take the game and earn a split in the series. Clay Buchholz, however, allowed two runs in the bottom half of the first to get the Twins back in it. The Sox never scored after three in the first and lost 7-3.

Sox Stud of the Game:

  • Manny Ramirez played despite injuring his hamstring a couple games ago. He apparently needed just one day off to recuperate, which is extremely rare for him. He may be turning a new leaf in his mid-to-late 30s, or he’s just playing extra-hard because it’s his contract year. It’s fine with me if that’s his motivation. Manny went 2-4 with a walk and a HR as he marches toward No. 500.

Diamond Dud of the Game:

  • Every Red Sox hitter in the lineup had a hit except for Jason Varitek (0-4), and even though they only scored three runs, the loss is not their fault. Starter Clay Buchholz continued to get knocked around all game, earning himself the honor of Diamond Dud. He allowed all seven runs on eight hits and five walks in 4 1/3 innings of bad work.

Dr. Clay, Mr. Buchholz?

  • Clay Buchholz has been so inconsistent this season. In his last two starts (including Monday night), he has allowed 12 runs in just 8 1/3 innings. Before that, Buchholz had three straight strong outings to bring his season ERA to 3.71. After his last two nightmares, his season ERA stands at 5.53.

Other Notes:

  • David Ortiz Batting Average Watch: 1-5, 1 RBI, .240 avg.
  • Craig Hansen pitched a perfect eighth inning with a strikeout.
  • J.D. Drew went 3-4 and is now hitting .301…wow.
