Lowell Delivers in Extras for Red Sox

Manny Ramirez

The Red Sox bats really took a long time to wake up, but with the help of some timely hitting and three Baltimore Orioles, the Sox “busted out” with five runs in a 5-2 victory in 13 innings. Manny Ramirez reached in the 13th on an error and made his way to 2nd base. Mike Lowell singled Manny home to take a 3-2 lead, and the Sox tacked on two more thanks to another Baltimore error to get their five runs.

Boston’s pitiful offense wasted another good start by Josh Beckett, who went six innings, giving up two runs on four hits and three walks with ten strikeouts. Daniel Cabrera was strong as well, going seven innings and allowing just two runs.

Sox Stud of the Game:

Mike Lowell gets the nod with a 3-5 night and two RBI’s. He had key at bats in the first (sac fly) and 12 innings later in the 13th (RBI single). Jacoby Ellsbury also played well with a 3-7 night with two doubles, one run scored, and three stolen bases (23 total stolen bases in 2008).

Diamond Dud of the Game:

After a big fat 0-5 with five men left on base, Dustin Pedroia earned the dubious distinction of my Diamond Dud of the Game. Pedroia’s batting average has now dipped below .280, down to .278. He has been slumping recently, hitting only .254 in May with only Saturday’s game left to play in the month.

Game Notes:

  • Mike Timlin (3-3) earned the win after one scoreless inning of relief.
  • Jonathan Papelbon earned his 15th save with a scoreless 13th inning.
  • David Ortiz is now back over .250 at .251 after a 2-5 night.
