Ortiz Out With Wrist Injury, Sox Lose

David Ortiz

Red Sox slugger David Ortiz has been a fixture in the No. 3 spot for much of his Red Sox career. Now, the Sox must move on without Ortiz for at least a month and perhaps the entire season after Sox doctors diagnosed Big Papi with a partially torn tendon in his left wrist, sending him to the disabled list. Ortiz would only beat our for the season if he opted for surgery, though Terry Francona was pretty confident in saying surgery “is very unlikely.”

Perhaps deflated by the bad news, the Red Sox lost the final game of a four-game series in Baltimore 6-3. Hideki Okajima was called to pitch in the eighth inning of a 3-2 game…and proceeded to allow four runs on four hits in just 2/3 of an inning to take the loss. Okie wasted another good start by Tim Wakefield, who went seven innings and allowed just two runs. Manny Ramirez contributed another HR (his 12th) in the loss.

Sox Stud of the Game:

The Sox had only two extra base hits: a Kevin Cash double and Manny’s 12th HR of the season. Manny also went 2-5, earning the nod this time as Sox Stud of the Game. He has been on a tear recently, especially with the weight of hitting his 500th HR now lifted off his shoulder.

Diamond Dud of the Game:

Hideki Okajima’s numbers looked pretty bad in Monday night’s game: .2 innings, four hits, four runs, one walk. The majority of his damage happened on one play, when he allowed a bases-clearing, three-run double to Adam Jones. Still, not a very clutch performance.

Tough Luck Timmy

Since May 1, Tim Wakefield has had three starts of at least seven innings, three (or less) runs, and no win to show for it. Last time out, he went eight innings with one run and suffered the loss to the Mariners. On May 1, Wake lost to the Rangers 3-0 after seven innings with just three runs allowed. Tough luck, Timmy!

Game Notes:

  • With Ortiz out, Francona slotted Kevin Youkilis to the No. 3 spot, kept Manny at the cleanup spot, then moved Mike Lowell to the No. 5 spot. Lowell was the only other Sox player besides Manny with two hits.
  • Thursday’s game will start early (6:05 p.m.) due to Game 1 of the NBA Finals.

  1. I have talked with a few people who are worried. I am not. As Timmy pointed out earlier to me, so you move Manny to DH and let him rest for a while. You play Coco and Ellsbury and there are worse things that can happen. Yes, you lose the 1-2 punch in your order, but you still have a pretty nasty offensive machine and wouldn’t we rather have this happen in August then October.

    Get Well Soon Papi.

  2. I’m not too worried either. Obviously he’s a big loss, but we can pick up the slack while he’s gone.

I also heard rumors about Barry Bonds becoming our DH. Could it be?
