David Ortiz has been slated to return to the Red Sox on July 25 against the New York Yankees. Ortiz will begin a minor league rehab assignment Thursday after the All-Star break with Triple-A Pawtucket. He’ll then play with Double-A Portland before returning to the big league club.
The Red Sox encountered even more injury problems Friday night, as Julio Lugo was forced to leave the game in the ninth inning while running out a grounder. He was diagnosed with a partially torn quad and could be out for at least a month.
To replace Lugo, the Red Sox called up INF Jed Lowrie, who will see a lot of time at SS with Lugo out. This is his chance to prove that he deserves to stay on the big club. While we all hope Lugo gets healthy enough to return, this could prove to be addition by subtraction with Lowrie replacing the injured Lugo.

Let’s see…Papi back in the line-up and Lugo to the DL, I think that’s a fair trade. I’ll take it.

Yeah no kidding, and now we get to see Jed Lowrie again.
