The best thing you can say about Red Sox pitching after last night’s performance is “at least they recorded 27 outs.” Otherwise…it was an atrocious showing for the Sox arms, but Rangers pitching fared worse in a 19-17 Red Sox win.
The Sox scored 10 runs in the first inning thanks in part to two three-run HR’s for David Ortiz. Would that be enough for Sox rookie Charlie Zink?
Making his major league debut for the injured Tim Wakefield, Zink receieved a lot of support. Zink, a knuckleballer, was charged with eight runs on 11 hits in 4 1/3 innings. In some spots, his knuckleball was working great, in most others however, he was totally clobbered. Terry Francona left him in to get his first win…but he couldn’t make it out of the fifth.
Kevin Youkilis added two HR’s, including a game-winning three-run HR in the eighth inning. Why talk more about a slugfest…at least with this game, it’s all in the numbers.
