September is continuing to wind down and the Red Sox find themselves getting closer and closer to a spot in October’s glory. The chance to defend their World Series win from last season is quickly approaching. Now, the Red Sox are still in second place in the AL East to the Rays by two and a half games after another difficult series against Tampa Bay.
The Sox had their last three game set with the Rays Monday through Wednesday in Tampa Bay, and despite their best efforts to get back on top of the AL East, the Rays fended them off once again. The Sox won the first game to get into a tie for first, but then fell back two games losing another close Game 2 and then a heartbreaking 10-3 loss on Wednesday. The Sox are now currently playing the Toronto Blue Jays in Toronto once again to try and catch the Rays. They won game 1 of the series and lost game 2 already. Game three is this afternoon.
The Rays have already clinched a spot in the playoffs for the first time in franchise history, but not the division yet. The Sox magic number to clinch a spot is just two, and they can do that today with a win and a Yankees loss. Boston is six and a half games ahead of New York in the Wild Card race, which is all but over (sometime this week hopefully).
Coming up, the Sox have their last full week of the season with games against Cleveland and the Yankees, all at Boston to end the season. October is almost here and the Red Sox are just about ready to defend that ring.
