Boston College improved to 6-0 at home and completed its nonconference schedule 3-1 with a win over MAC leading Central Michigan. The Eagles record now stands at 6-3 overall, making them one of three ACC teams to secure bowl eligibility meaning BC should be playing in the postseason for the eleventh consecutive season. Walk-on turned scholarship kicker Steve Aponavicius also broke the school’s scoring record, held for 20 years by Brian Lowe.

First Half All About Field Position

The Eagles and Chippewas played field position football in the first half on a beautiful fall day. A partly cloudy day at about 70 degrees was marked by wind that really stiffened up at times. The teams combined to punt on the first eight drives of the game and the Eagles were only able to execute 16 plays on their first four tries, going three and out twice, crossed midfield once, and never got more than 33 yards.

Central Michigan drew first blood with a 13 play, 60 yard drive resulting in a field goal to take the lead 3-0 with just over six minutes to play in the half. The score seemed to be what BC needed to put some of their own points on the board. Dave Shinskie (18-28, 263 yards, 1 TD) was five for six with 58 yards on the drive and ran for six yards and Montel Harris (27 rush, 134 yards, 2 TD, 2 receptions, 37 yards) ran four times for 16 yards, including the three yard touchdown that put BC on top to stay. Rich Gunnell (9 receptions, 147 yards, 1 TD) caught three of the passes on the drive, including a big 29 yard gain.

Eagles Put Game Away in Third Quarter

The Eagles opened the second half with the ball after deferring when the won the opening toss. They drove 74 yards in seven plays including Gunnell’s 41 yard touchdown pass to take a 14-3 lead. After forcing a three and out, BC executed another seven play 72 yard drive, capped by another Harris score to go up 21-3. BC forced another three and out and drove 55 yards for a field goal, which put Aponavicius in BC’s record books.

Luke Kuechly punctuated the win by returning BC’s second interception for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Central Michigan ground out a 60 yard drive for a touchdown with essentially no time on the clock to close out the Eagles 31-10 win.

Looking Ahead

BC will take a late bye week before finishing with three ACC games as they are still in pursuit of the Atlantic Division title. They will look for their first road win of the season when they travel to Virginia in two weeks. The Cavaliers are 3-5 and 2-2 in ACC play. The Eagles are 3-0 against Virginia all time. They first met in 1963 in Chestnut Hill, were pitted against each other in the 1994 Blockbuster Bowl, and most recently met in the Eagles debut season in the ACC in 2005, also at home. The teams will play in Charlottesville for the first time.
